What do we know about prehistory after reading the book, Dar?

The book, Dar, is about a boy growing up fifteen thousand years ago in Southern France. Even though this book is historical fiction, we learn things about this time period in history.

Write what you have learned about how people survived then, what wildlife was here, and the situations they encountered in their daily living. Give your thoughts and feelings about living fifteen thousand years ago.

  1. I love the book Dar,
Dar is a young boy who is soon turning into a man in his clan. When Dar wakes up (witch is before sunrise) he makes the morning fire using his grandfather’s sunstone and a piece of flint. Dar and the clan do lots of stuff; they go foraging for herbs and roots. One day Dar's uncle Kenok came home hurt and there is only one cure and he sends Dar out to get the herb.

One day while Kenok is still hurt he decides to send Dar out to check his traps. In one of the traps Dar finds a baby fox cub and he decides to let it go. While Dar was out he ran into a stranger and he looked really fascinated with Dar's sunstone.
The next day Dar and Bowan have their initation ceremony when they turn into a man in the clan and they now officially can do whatever they want whenever they want.
Now that Dar has his manmark he decides to go and find the strangers clan. On his way there Dar encounters lots of thing including ,falling through a frozen lake , sleeping in a tree .the best part is that in the clan that the stranger is in his grandfather is there and he is very old, and can only eat soups and stews. 2. I think Dar and the Spear Thrower is a very exciting book. I don’t think Dar made the right decision in trading Toreg for the sunstone. The Spear Thrower isn’t even a magic item. It was hand crafted by someone from his own clan. I also think Kenok shouldn’t take his anger out on Dar because of his own past. I think it would be pretty cool to live back then. But some of the foods they eat don’t sound very appetizing. Also some of the chores they do might gross me out. But otherwise it would be okay. #12

  3. Form reading the book Dar and the Spear-Thrower I have learned new words such as windbreaker and ivory. I think I would not like to life in the same time period as Dar because I like electricity.

I think Uncle Kenok is not nice to Dar because whenever he looks or talks to Dar he is reminded of the time Dars father was killed he failed the “spirit test”.

I think Dar is so excited about the spear-thrower because he can show to Uncle Kenok that he is good at hunting and he can be a man. #8

  4. I think the book Dar is a really great book! Dar wonders how he can change a small boy into a man. I also think Dar is a great book because the time period happens in time of fifteen thousand years ago. I also think that other people should read the book Dar because it is a great adventure book. And what I have learned so far was that Dar is a boy who lives with his Grandma and his Uncle Kenok. Dar has no mom and dad because I think they have died. And now Dar went to a ceremony to show that he is now a man. He completed one the steps before becoming a man that step was that he had to bath himself in order to wash away his childhood. I have learned so much the the book Dar ! This is one of my most favorite books!

  5. What I learned so far is that Dar is a boy that lives in a tent with his Grandma and his Uncle Kenok. Dar is a boy in the book that is about to become a man but before he does he had to light the fire every morning to keep animals away and also the way he made the fire is he has a sunstone from his Grandfather, his Grandfather had to trade 2 mammoth tusk. Dar has no Mom and Dad because they both died; the way the father died is when Dar’s Dad went hunting because there was not a lot of food to spare so when Dar’s Dad went hunting and there was a sabered tooth cat and killed his father, the way Dar’s mother died was because there was not a lot of food to spare and they had to give it to the children so there was not a lot of food left and when she had Dar, she died. Before Dar could become a man he had to do all these steps, #1 they could not eat until the next new moon,#2 they had to wait till the sun reached the top of the oak tree, #3 they had to go to the sacred cave, #4 they had to go in and find the way to the heart of the fire. Because Uncle Kenok was injured he had to set up all the traps and he met a stranger and he had a spear called the spear thrower and the stranger was really intrested in the sunstone and he wanted to trade but Dar said no at first and the stranger was upset so he left. A few weeks as being a man Dar said to him self that he was going to go to the starngers camp and there were many challenges along the way. When they made the trade hye found out that the leader of there camp was Dar's great Uncle. So he stayed with his Uncle and learned how to use the spere in the afternoons and learned how to carve stuff in mornings.

  7. Dar is a great book and I finished it today, if I lived in the time period that Dar did I would like it and not like it at the same time.I would like it because you would have a lot of time in the woods and nature and you would have to have good survival skills to make a fire and everything. I would not like it because you would not have laptops and telivisions and heat and even good food and shelter.
Dar has encourntered lots of stuff like , jumping into a river naked, falling through ice on a lake, sleeping in a tree, and getting cut with a knife getting his manmark.....
but if you want to find out more you can read the book yourself

  9. I though the book Dar and the Spear Thrower was a great book. At first I didn't know why Kenok didn't like Dar. I thought it was sad how Dar's dad died. My favorite character was Kenok, because he was the toughest one in the clan. I don't know why Mora made Dar climb up all the way to get the healing plants, because she knew that Dar was afraid of heights. I thought at the end of the book that Dar would go back to his clan. I was suprised that Dar and Kenok became friends at the end of the book. My favorite animal in the book Dar and the Spear Thrower was the Dagger Tooth Tiger. You may be thinking how could you like the meanest animal in the book? The reason I like the Dagger Tooth Tiger the most is because it is the strongest animal. #7

  10. Dar
From reading the book ‘Dar and the Spear-Thrower’, I have learned more about how it was like 15,000 years ago.
I think it would be hard to live that long ago because you have to survive by building camps and making fires instead of modern day living. It would be hard to live without TVs and computers, but it would be fun to live that long ago for a little bit.
In this book, Dar learns how to build fires, make windbreakers or shelters, carve things out of wood, antler, and ivory, and he learns how to do lots of other things too. #26

  15. What I learned from Dar is that in prehistoric times there were a lot of dangers like wild animals and people from a different clan. During that time there were a lot of chores to like starting the morning fire (wich Dar had to do in the begining of the book) makes supplies and when they are old enough and get there man markes the boys have to hunt with the men.At first Dar was very scared adout hunting but after his firts time he was not scared. I also learned that they have diffrent tradishins like when they give Dar and Bowan there man marks. #17

  16. This book is placed back in the 15000.Dar is a boy that lives with his uncle Kenok and grand mother .Dar has to do stuff on his own like hunt for food and other stuff . Dars grandmother takes care of him and prepares the meal .In the book Dar learns how to make fires, wind breakers and shelters. If I lived back then I would not like it because their wear no computers or other fun stuff. In the end of the book I liked when the became friends (Dar and kenok).

  17. After reading the book Dar, i learned that it was a very complicated life back then and it got easier later on and while hunting cooking and sewing and more it was very hard becuse they didn't have metal needles or stoves or vehicles when you need to move. But with more complications you can earn a better life because by helping each other out itwill make you a better person . but learning that back in prehistory they had to find there way and get hurt more often but still had a great life. Back to prehistory, while living back in prehistory times they had to face more challenges and help planting. But helping out back then they leaned that they can help even by living out in the wilderness. While reading Dar, Dar was growing up to become a man and while still being a child he helped by doing adult things like in the begining his uncle got wounded and Dar had to climb a boulder just to get a heeling plant, but when he got up he had a challenge, he had to get the plants without falling or being attacked by the birds that lived up there. But still he had accomplished his thing. I would like to live back then because i would want to see how nice nature would be and help out with stuff and living back then would keep me occupied every second because i really don't like being bored and i love to help and play with my friends back in prehistory.

  18. In our book we meet a character named Dar who is very adventerous and is about to become a man.His grandfather died when he was young but before he did he gave him a special rock that is called a sunstone and the rock makes fire.Dar also lost his mother and father when he was a baby. His father was killed by a Saber Toothed Cat.Later in the book,Kenok, Dar`s uncle, gets hurt by the same animal Dar`s father got killed by.Because of that, Dar has to go out and check Kenok`s traps. When Dar gets there,he finds a fox,a little bear cub that he lets go, and a person, okay its not what you think,a person go`s in Dar`s clan`s territory.Later in the book Dar becomes a man and he is going on a journey. He gets there and he sees the stranger,Toreg who has a spearthrower that Dar wants, and they make a trade,Dar trades his sunstone.Toreg brings Dar to a cave were there is a man in it.That man is Dar`s great-uncle!Dar`s grandmother,Mora, thought her brother was dead.I really liked this book! His great-uncle is a carver for Toreg`s clan and lost his foot when he just became a man.If I lived back then I would be okay with it because I would`nt have to do much and I would`nt have to go to school. Not that I don`t like school. #6

  25. Dar And The Spear-Thrower is about a boy called Dar who lives with his Grandmother, Mora and his Uncle, Kenok. Uncle Kenok is not very nice to Dar. One day Uncle Kenok gets hurt from one of his hunting trips and Dar climbs a cliff to recive a herb that will be used for a healing potion.Uncle Kenok was wounded so Dar went and emptied Uncle Kenok's traps that were in the woods.

After emptying all the traps Dar saw a man. The man walked up to Dar and tried to talk to him but the strange man did not speak the same langue as Dar. To show he meant peace, Dar put down his spear and offered meat to the stranger. The stranger also put his weapons down. Dar started a fire to roast the meat on. To start a fire he used a special sun stone that had once been his grandfathers. The stranger was interested in the sun stone and used his hands to indicate a trade. The stranger showed Dar a curved tube with a carving of a horse at the end. The stranger placed his spear in the tube and threw with all his might, still holding onto the tube. The spear went very far, father than Dar had ever seen a spear throwen. But Dar still refused the trade. When Dar returned to his clan and told his Uncle and Grandmother about the stranger, Uncle Kenok was very mad. Uncle Kenok said how dare Dar even consider trading the sun stone! In a few days Dar had his Inittion ceramony. After his Inittion ceramony Dar could go were ever he pleased with out Kenoks permission. Dar planned to travel to the strangers clan and trade the sun stone for the spear-thrower.

The rest of the book is about Dars jorney to the strangers camp and what he learns there. I really enjoyed reading this book! #8
